ing+come+in+handy.+I%E2%80%99ve+gradually+moved+away+from+using+the+photo+for+the+entire+painting.+Now%2C+I+may+use+it+for+one+or+two+sessions-+just+for+composition+and+perspective-+but+then+I+allow+myself+go+on+without+it.+Otherwise%2C+I+get+too+caught+up+in+realistic+details.+I+excel+at+copying+what+I+see%2C+but+as+Ive+grown+more+confident+Ive+begun+to+give+myself+the+freedom+to+work+from+my+own+vision%2C+as+well.I%E2%80%99ve+developed+a+basic+oil+palette+that+I+use.+This+means+the+set+of+colors+that+I+lay+out+when+I+sit+down+to+paint.+In+the+beginning%2C+I+bought+a+whole+set+of+colors-+but+some+of+those+tubes+still+have+a+lot+of+paint+left+in+them+%28black%2C+sap+green%2C+cerulean+blue%2C+burnt+sienna%29.+Bold+and+bright+colors+most+inspire+me.+I+cant+seem+to+be+satisfied+with+my+paintings+unless+the+colors+really+POP%21In+the+beginning%2C+I+premixed+colors+on+my+palette+before+applying+them.+Now+I+tend+to+just+layer+and+mix+colors+right+on+the+canvas.+I+have+two+or+three+brushes+that+I+always+go+back+to.+On+many+paintings%2C+I%E2%80%99ll+just+use+one+brush+for+the+entire+time.+Once+I+get+going+in+the+zone+the+reality+of+having+to+change+brushes+feels+like+a+distration.+Eventually%2C+I+may+realize+that+I+must+to+create+the+effect+I+desire%2C+so+then+Ill+switch+to+a+different+brush+and+go+down+that+path+for+a+while.+The+colors+I%E2%80%99m+most+drawn+to+are%3A+Thio+violet%2C+thalo+blue%2C+ultramarine+blue%2C+cadmium+yellows%2C+viridian.+You%E2%80%99ll+see+these+over+and+over+in+my+work-+even+in+the+portraits.+Occasionally%2C+I+use+a+premixed+oil+%E2%80%9Cskin+tone%E2%80%9D+as+a+base+color+for+people+%28this+is+just+a+basic+blend+of+a+few+colors+that+I+actually+already+have+in+my+palette%29-+but+it+never+stays+that+way+for+long%21+White%2C+cadmium+yellow%2C+and+thio+violet+%28plus+alizarin+crimson%2C+or+cadmium+red%2C+or+orange%29+make+a+great+base+tone+without+the+premixed+paint.+A+little+thalo+blue+mixed+in+makes+for+good+shadow+tones.+Thio+violet+and+viridian+make+the+best+deep+purple.+You+might+think+skin+is+just+beige%2C+but+when+I+look+I+see+purples%2C+pinks%2C+blues%2C+greens%2C+reds%2C+yellows...I+also+experiment+with+oil+pastels%2C+which+are+basically+crayon+sticks+of+oil+paint.+They+take+forever+to+dry%2C+though.+I+have+watercolors+that+I+use+sometimes%2C+too.+For+drawing+I+use+charcoal+pencils+and+cont%C3%A9+crayon.+Cont%C3%A9+is+a+bit+less+flaky+than+charcoal%3B+a+little+more+clay%28ey%29%2C+but+acts+about+the+same+as+charcoal.+However%2C+I+really+love+the+feel+of+working+with+oil+paints+and+charcoal+and+tend+to+go+back+to+them+over+and+over+again.+Experimenting+with+media+and+achieving+an+effect+is+like+discovering+a+new+tool+to+attain+what+I+want.+It+never+ceases+to+amaze+and+delight+me.+Each+and+every+project+that+I+work+on+gives+me+countless+hours+of+enjoyment+and+creative+expression%21Commission+a+PortraitA+custom+portrait+makes+an+amazing+gift.+An+anniversary%2C+a+wedding%2C+a+birth%2C+or+even+a+death...It+has+really+struck+me+how+touched+people+are+when+they+see+a+portrait+of+themselves+or+a+loved+one.+Theres+often+an+initial+shyness+as+they+see+themselves%2C+or+that+person%2C+reflected+back+so+clearly+and+accurately-+and+then+follows+the+inability+to+look+away+as+they+see+through+the+eyes+of+the+artist%2C+with+the+awareness+that+an+investment+of+hours+and+weeks+and+months+has+been+made+in+observing+them+so+closely.+It+is+very+fulfilling+for+everyone+involved.The+commissioning+process+is+simple%2C+but+it+does+take+some+advance+planning.+A+drawing+can+be+completed+in+as+short+as+a+week.+This+is+a+less+expensive+option-+which+can+be+great+for+memorializing+a+time+and+a+place%2C+without+the+investment+of+a+painting+%28growing+children%2C+for+example%29.+With+care%2C+drawings+can+last+a+very+long+time.+Each+oil+portrait+requires+somewhere+between+20+and+50+working+hours%2C+with+drying+time+in-between.+This+means%2C+realistically%2C+at+least+a+couple+of+months+turnaround-+depending+on+what+other+projects+I+have+going+on+at+the+time.+However%2C+as+Im+sure+youve+seen%2C+an+oil+portrait+will+last+for+generations.A+quality+photo+is+essential.+I+would+love+to+have+a+meeting+with+the+subject%2C+and+even+to+be+able+to+take+photos+myself.+This+allows+me+to+get+a+feel+for+the+personality%2C+as+well+as+the+actual+%E2%80%9Clook%E2%80%9D+of+the+person.+It+also+allows+the+person+to+be+a+part+of+the+process+of+having+their+story+captured%2C+which+is+an+exciting%2C+once-in-a-+lifetime+experience.But+a+surprise+can+be+wonderful%2C+I+know%21You+may+know+the+subject+very+well+and+have+an+idea+of+what+youre+trying+to+say+about+them+%28or+to+them%29.+You+may+have+already+done+the+work+of+finding+the+perfect+photo.+Maybe+it%E2%80%99s+a+picture+thats+been+lurking+in+your+drawer+that+makes+you+say%2C+that+is+so+Mom.+Or+maybe+its+a+photo+that+you+know+they+love.+Feel+free+to+get+creative%2C+too%21In+which+case%2C+you+can+supply+a+picture.+Keep+in+mind+that+it+needs+to+be+large+enough+that+all+features+are+easily+visi
