I love the meditative process of painting: the gradual observation, the layering of colors... but the simplicity of charcoal on paper has also always appealed to me. One of the things I love about drawing is that the gratification of a finished product is more immediate- and can still be every bit as satisfying as a painting. Often, I can complete a drawing in just one or two sittings. I enjoy taking breaks from the longer process of finishing a full painting to hone my observational skills, and get "back to basics" with sketching and drawing. A portrait in charcoal or conte´ is also a great way to capture a moment in life, without the financial investment and lead time that a painting requires.
